“For photography is nothing more than merely painting with solely light and intent.”
It started with a swing-out.
In the early 2010s I was introduced to exciting and energetic world of Lindy-hop. It was (and still is) a great activity to meet wonderful people and learn about the connections that people share with one another.
A few years in and I’m asked to help teach at a start-up dance school. It was there that I’d first picked up a camera as we needed someone to produce media. From there photography has taken me on many adventures and given me chances to work with people I wouldn’t have otherwise dreamt to have worked with.
I still view photography collaborations in much the same way as partners in dancing - communication between both parties is essential to produce a fondly memorable moment. Even if the idea seems small, we can build it up to something that will surely exceed your expectations!
From Dancing to Studios & Cosplay
Houston has a wonderful art scene, and I’ve been fortunate to have teachers and mentors to help me grow as an artist in and out of the studios.
Cosplay (Costume-Play for the uninitiated) was the start on a very interesting idea. A personal love letter to a character of a story you’ve loved and/or identified with. At Comicpalooza one year I had the fortune to meet one such cosplayer by the name of Holly Gloha. After shooting with her she introduced me to Cosplay Vogue of Houston - a fantastic group of men and women who wanted to make sure no one was forgotten regardless of how they appeared. To this day I’m still thankful for the opportunities and learning experiences I’ve gained from them.
Cosplay is still one of my primary focuses in photography to help others be recognized for all the hard work they poured into their creations. They have fueled my creativity and inspired the spontaneous use of it frequently. I’ve been published several times over the years for my work in this genre, and the experience has been immensely rewarding.
